Guess who's back, back again? [Aug. 24th, 2006|08:20 pm]
[mood | woo!]

This is something on the Author's part to keep me from feeling so neglected. She's starting to write fanfic about me again! Yay!

Has it really been a year? [Jan. 1st, 2006|10:54 pm]
[mood | party!]
[music |"Auld Lang Syne"]

A whole year since I've arrived on DS9. Time sure passes quickly, doesn't it? I remember that first day like it was, well, yesterday. And the first weeks, when I was still walking on eggshells. It's amazing how my timidity just evaporated.

I've met so many new friends, [info]ezri_tigan_dax, [info]legate_damar, [info]kasidy_yates, and [info]julian_subatoi, not to mention everyone else! This year's been full of its ups and downs, and I wouldn't trade it for the whole Local Group. I haven't updated this as much as I'd like, so I'll work on that this year!

*raises glass* Here's to many more years of adventure, mystery, and discovery on Deep Space Nine.

I hope this isn't the same stuff that led to the toothbrush incident...

Of presents and life [Dec. 8th, 2005|04:46 pm]
[mood | tired]
[music |"Master of the House" - Les Miserables]

Aww, I just got a late birthday present from the Twins. It's a holoprogram based on the Napoleonic Wars, based in the British camp. It looks really interesting. I can't wait to try it out. Maybe around 1800 hours? I'll ask Ezri and Julian, see if they want to go with me. I play all these violent games. Do I have a problem? Well, as long as I keep it in the holosuites, I don't think so. I still worry myself, however.

Hmm. I wonder if Quark's ever heard "Master of the House" from the Terran musical Les Miserables? It fits him like a glove. Maybe I should ask him when I go down tonight.

In other news, I've been researching the Terran scientist Carl Sagan. He was right about a lot of things, though a pity he died long before the humans first came into contact with the Vulcans. He would certainly be interesting to talk to. I wonder if there's a holoprogram of him? Shouldn't be too hard to make one, I should think. DS9's been pretty quiet--well, as quiet as it gets around here, anyway. *chuckles*

I'll seriously make a conscious effort to keep this active, I promise.

Ack! [Nov. 30th, 2005|04:56 pm]
[mood | eep!]
[music |"Birthday" - The Beatles]

Goodness! I'd almost forgot it was my birthday! Now I'm all ashamed for forgetting my journal. So happy birthday to me.

I'm turning 27 already! That's so weird. I never thought I'd be this old. I half-expected to die in the Dominion Wars. But all things considered, I'm rather glad I'm living here on DS9. Can you believe I've almost been here for a whole year?

There's too much that's happened in the past few months to recall right now, so we'll settle for some staggered updates. *lopsided grin*

Party time! (Half-OOC) [May. 17th, 2005|08:14 pm]
[mood | omgwtfbbq?!]
[music |"Birthday" - The Beatles]

Beriani gnawed her lip thoughtfully. The Wardroom was decorated with balloons, streamers, and other such festive objects. "What d'you think, Gary?" She asked the squirrel. His only response was to swish his tail, tickling the back of her neck. "Yeah, I thought so. Now I just have to wait for everyone to show up--"

BANG! What looked like a cat-eared human in late twentieth-century Earth clothes popped into the middle of the Wardroom, hurriedly stuffing a red buckram book back into her pocket. "Here, you look like you need help with that banner," she said, pointing to a banner emblazoned with the words "Happy Birthday, Ezri!"

The Trill just gaped for a bit. "What the--who are you?" she finally asked once she'd gotten her voice back. Even when you worked in her field, this kind of thing didn't happen every day.

The strange girl only clucked. "Tch! And you don't remember me. A shame, I say! Remember back during the power outage, when Captain Sisko and Odo came to Earth, and everyone was scared that the Founders would kill them?" Beriani nodded dubiously. "Yeah, remember during that, Commander K't'lk introduced you to me? You were only a few years older than me. Ah, the cruel passage of time..."

"Yes! Yes, I remember that!...Kitty, is it?" The girl nodded. "She never said how she knew you, though..." Beri squinted. "You haven't changed a bit."

"One of the perks of being extradimensional, I suppose." Kitty blinked. "Wait, she never said how we knew each other? We were both on the Enterprise once. Kirk's Enterprise. NCC-1701. It was pretty fun. I mean, aside from the anentropia infecting the universe and all..."

Beriani hid her head in her hands. "No way. Kirk's Enterprise?" She sat down hard.

Kitty gave her a playful shove. "C'mon, we have a party to set up. Grab that end of the banner, willyer?"

Bashir and Ezri will probably remember her (Bashir would back away...she had (has?) a tendency to randomly waisttackle him from time to time)...Damar too, maybe. I haven't worked that out. Anyway, this is kind of in conjunction with this DS9 fic I'm writing. Whee. Oh, how fun 'tis when the muses and muns meet...

Wakey wakey [Apr. 21st, 2005|03:14 am]
[mood | sleepy. I'm on beta shift, dammit!]
[music |The turbolift and DS9's nighttime noises]

Beriani was peacefully sleeping, dreaming nonsense dreams about the Titanic and apple tart(or something equally odd). She was startled into somewhat-wakefulness when the comm system in her room activated.

"Lieutenant Edenost, please report to Ops at once." The voice was that of an ensign with whom she was unfamiliar.

"Hnnnnnnf." She said, her face firmly planted in her pillow.

"I'm sorry, I didn't catch that."

The Trill raised her head for long enough to say "Understood, Edenost out," before she flopped back on the bed again.

"Computer, what time is it?"

"The time is oh-three-hundred-fourteen hours."

"That's madness, I'm on beta shift," she complained.

"Please restate."

"Oh, bugger it," she mumbled from the pillow, rolling over onto her back. "'S too early."

Gary, noting his owner's reluctance, quietly padded over to her and sat on her chest, beady silver eyes watching her. When she did not move, he pawed at her nose.

She cracked open an eye. "You are a bad man." He just chittered and leapt off her when she sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. With a great amount of willpower, she wiggled out of her covers and staggered over to the replicator. "Tarkalean tea, and some whole-wheat bread, somewhat toasted. With butter on it," she added. "I like butter."

The food materialized in a Cardassian transporter haze, and she began to bolt it down. "This ought to keep me awake," she said, swigging a sip of her still-hot tea and wincing as the warm liquid burned her tongue. She quickly pulled her uniform on and ran a brush through her hair a few times, then ran out the door.

"This better be something really bloody important," she muttered as she caught the turbolift.

Recap of the past month [Apr. 14th, 2005|11:15 pm]
[mood | very, very stupid.]
[music |"Chicago" - Perfect Dark]

I just realized how long it's been since I updated this. Nearly a month, now! See, that's why I never make journals or logs. I make a few entries, then forget them for a year. Ah well. Such is life.

I've started having conversations with Morn. Well, I say that, but it's him who does most of the talking. He's sweet, though, so I think one can excuse a bit of over-chattiness on his part.

I found a few of my old things from the Academy and early days on the Vinland, under a pile of padds if you can believe it. It still hurts to look at Pat's picture, but a little less, I think, since the inversion drive incident. I also found one of his projects - these two ancient shooter games called GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. Not the original copies, naturally; those are from the twentieth century. Pat had been working on making them into holodeck programs, and I picked up the task after he died. Got maybe to about the tenth level of GoldenEye, and we hadn't even touched PD. Sure, the graphics are childish, the gameplay is straightforward, the controls are laughably outdated...but it's a hell of a lot of fun.

Oh, and I also just did one of the most incredibly stupid things I've done in a long time. I had developed these goggles from K't'lk's research (I owe her so much...) that can let you see a neighboring dimension. It's rather boring, really, just some shining golden strands in some places. So, I was trying them out for the first time in Science Lab 4. I looked at the doorframe and saw one of those hyperstrings. "Ah-ha," I said, and, being entirely too feline, I swiped at it.

I, of course, forgot that my body was still in the physical realm and sprained my right hand. I'm nearly too ashamed to go to the Infirmary (but I'm going anyway...my hand hurts, dammit)...I just hope Julian Dr. Bashir's not there. I'd hate to look like a fool in front of him, considering I've already done that. Not fun.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind too terribly if he was there...just please, Iau, please don't let him ask how this happened.

I am an idiot.

A simple test [Mar. 22nd, 2005|02:10 pm]
[mood | wow. just...wow.]
[music |The Fallen - End Credits]

Beriani stretched in the small runabout. The specs for the prototypical inversion drive were up on the main viewer, and she gave them a good once-over before informing [info]col_kira_nerys that she was ready to leave. The vessel powered up and took off, making its way towards the wormhole.

She was excited, no doubt about that, for not only was she about to go through the wormhole for the first time, she was about to test her mentor K't'lk's design, that the Hamalki had given to her before she left Academy. Beriani'd been working on this for years, now, and K't'lk even longer. She had no doubt that it would get her where she needed to go, but the tricky part was to be able to do it without compromising the fabric of space-time, a factor that hindered her teacher's previous experiments.

"Okay," she said breathlessly, looking at the wormhole, "Here I go." The plan was to go to the Gamma Quadrant and invert back to DS9, hopefully without any "inversion experiences" that plagued the last test, on board the original U.S.S. Enterprise. Piloting the Rio Grande into the wormhole with practiced precision, she gasped. The wormhole was beautiful!

"Not much to do now but sit tight," she said and went to the replicator to get herself a tea. Returning to her chair with the steaming mug, she put it down, not noticing a small spill. A minute later, Beriani decided she wanted a sandwich too, got up again--

--and stepped right on the spilt tea, slipping backwards. One of her flailing arms hit the activation button for the inversion drive, and all she had time to think was "Oh, bugger."

Then everything went white... )

When she opened them again, she was back on the Rio Grande inside the wormhole, but standing up. She hesitantly tapped her commbadge with a hand. "Edenost to Major Kira, I think I'll need to test this some more," she said. "I'll be coming back in a few minutes."

"Understood. Kira out."

Beriani looked at the object that had been put in her hand, and she smiled a little, tears threatening to well up in her eyes again.

It was Patrick's commbadge.

Those lost [Mar. 17th, 2005|11:10 am]
[mood | depressed a bit]
[music |"Birthday" - The Beatles]

I woke up this morning and stared at the date on my console.

March 17th.

Aside from being St. Patrick's Day on Earth, it's also Patrick's birthday.

He would have been 27 today.

Depsite the fact that I'm not a religious person, when I get off duty, I think I'll go to the Bajoran Temple and pray for him.

I think he'd like that.

Happy birthday, Pat...

She ties her hair up with a green elastic when she gets an incoming message from the USS Vinland. It's from the twins. S'Rahi and K'Arhu pop up on her screen.

Greetings, hlah'feihre[1] S'Rahi says. How are you?

Beriani shrugs. Okay, I guess. What about you, sh'heih[2]? Hu-rhiw[3]?

K'Arhu, who she called hu-rhiw, replies with We are fine. We are always fine. We hear you are DS9's science officer. Congratulations!

Oh. Heh. Thanks. The Trill blushes a little.

S'Rahi looks somber.
We wish to present condolences about Patrick. He is twenty-seven in Earth years, correct?

Beriani sighs a bit. Sadrao syntax made it seem like Pat was still alive. Yeah. I miss him.

We miss him too, Arhu nods. We do not know if humans get more than one life, such as we do, but I'm sure he is in Iau's[4] company.

Beriani smiles, and then starts as a beep from her padd reminds her that she has to go. Hey guys, I'm due on duty, but I'll talk to you later, okay? She winces at how weird that will sound to Sadrao ears.

All right, good bye, hlah'feihre. Her friends terminate the connection.

Foof, she says, and leaves to her station.

[1] hlah'feihre - tortoiseshell, spotted. A nickname for a Trill among Sadrao.
[2] sh'heih - queen, female
[3] hu-rhiw - night-and-day, Arhu's coloring
[4] Iau - queen of the Sadrao pantheon

A disturbing little reminder of the past [Feb. 23rd, 2005|08:30 pm]
[mood | foof. bad dream.]
[music |"Within You Without You" - The Beatles]

It is DS9's night, and Beriani is tossing and turning, whimpering in her sleep. Gary, curled up beside her ear, takes no notice. She clutches the covers anxiously, and rolls over.

Beriani's distressing dream )

Beriani sits bolt upright, in a cold sweat. She flops back again, cursing her silly dream.

Or maybe not so silly.

She moves to the console and sends a text-only message to Ezri.

Hey, Ezri.

I know it’s kind of late, but can I set up an appointment for tomorrow? There’s a few things I need to come to grips with.

Thanks,

Beriani.

Sighing, she sits back on the bed. “Now I know I won’t get back to sleep anytime soon,” she muses aloud, and gets a tranya from the replicator. It was as good as anything, at least.

Holoprogram-weaving fun [Feb. 16th, 2005|06:22 pm]
[mood | jubilant]
[music |"Circle of Life" - Lion King OST]

One of my favorite off-duty activities: writing holoprograms. They're really bad, but I think it's fun. Now, it's anything but.

Damn! The Trill yells as, for the umpteenth time, her new project fails to render correctly. It's admittedly more complex than her earlier works; this one being a holoprogram of Mossflower Country from the ancient Earth "Redwall" book series. This is more difficult because she's adding a disgise feature, so that not only the anthropomorphic characters think that you are one of them, it fools you into thinking that also.

Bloody hell bugger it damn it all! This fresh outburst is caused by yet another failed attempt.

Gary, attempting to cheer her up, leaps for her shoulder, misses, and crashes into the console.

Ack! Gary! Are you okay?

The squirrel dazedly points to the screen, now with a perfect project. Beriani whoops in glee.

Gary-chan, you're a genius, mon ami! Come on, cobber, I'll get you an apple. Grabbing a Kaferian apple, she lobs it to the squirrel.

Let's go test it in Quark's. She sits at the console again and sends a message to Ezri, asking if she'd like to join. And Julian would be nice too, she thinks. Down, Beri, down.

The first wave of homesickness hits [Jan. 17th, 2005|07:26 pm]
[mood | painting and reflecting]
[music |"Summertime"-Porgy and Bess]

I drew a quick sketch of the twins today.

S'Rahi and K'Arhu, the twins )

God, I miss them. It's not like I want for friends here--there's [info]ezri_tigan_dax, [info]legate_damar, [info]weyoun_nine, and [info]kasidy_yates.

Still, I can't help but think about them...me and Arhu sailing on the holodeck, S'Rahi and her Andorian salmon, their eternal present-tense...

Beriani sighs, remembering the twins.

I mean, they're still on the Vinland-it's not like I'll never see them again.

She instructs the computer to play "Summertime" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess as she solemnly covers the table in a work-cloth, brings out the paints and little troops, and then proceeds to paint a Gondorian. Call me old-fashioned, but I really prefer the old way of fighting to starships and phasers...it all seems so much...simpler. Another sigh. I guess that's what these blokes are for, eh?

I love painting. It lets you do something tactile while you muse...

I have arrived! [Jan. 1st, 2005|09:46 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |None. Too tired.]

Uhm, how should I start this? Physicist's lo-no...Lieutenant's log...no...

Ah! I got it! Beriani's log, stardate...oh, bugger stardates for now. I'm tired. I just arrived on DS9 an hour ago. Gary really likes it here-I can tell because he's snoozing on my bed.

When the welcoming committee met me at the airlock, I was somewhat pleased by the fact that there's another Trill on the station, Ezri Dax. It turns out that in her previous life, she also worked at DS9! Creepy. She's really nice, though.

*yawn* Wow, I'm tired. I think I'll follow Gary's lead. Gerroff my bed, you silly squirrel...
